Thomas Bewick School is an all age (3-19 years) specialist provision for 261 children and young people with autism. All pupils have a diagnosis of ASD and an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
The school has a fantastic reputation for providing high quality autism specific education, training and support and is committed to its vision of being seen as a ‘centre of excellence’ within the field.
The school is arranged as follows over three different sites
- Thomas Bewick Site 1 (West Denton) – 17 classes of mainly primary aged pupils
- Thomas Bewick Site 2 (West Denton) – very near to Site 1 and accessed via the Studio West Academy site. This site has 8 classes for predominantly secondary aged pupils and our Post-16 students
- Thomas Bewick @ Broadwood (East Denton) – our newest site opened in September 2020 and was agreed in cooperation with the local authority as part of its strategic expansion plan for ASD places in Newcastle. It is a short drive away from Site 1 and Site 2, and currently home to our specialist assessment nursery and 4 Reception classes.
All of our sites, classrooms and learning spaces have been designed with the autistic learner in mind to ensure that our pupils have access to an autism specific environment with a range of specialist facilities and activities available to support different aspects of their learning and development. Our relevant, exciting and challenging curriculum is taught and supported by a dedicated team of caring and friendly staff who are trained in a range of autism specific approaches and strategies.
Our school motto is ‘Growth Through Understanding’ – a multi-directional process that underpins everything we do. We believe that ‘growth’ occurs when each pupil is seen as an individual and when their own unique skills, interests and talents are nurtured, but we also believe that other members of our school community can learn and ‘grow’ from each other too. We have a shared commitment to providing the best possible learning opportunities for each and every pupil, their families and our staff.
